They agreed that President Putin’s so-called “annexation” of Ukraine’s territory has no legitimacy and that Ukraine’s territory will remain Ukraine’s. Minister Joly highlighted the importance of continuing their work together to respond to Putin’s unprovoked, illegal war in Ukraine and in support of the Ukrainian people. During the meeting, Minister Joly and Secretary Blinken discussed their close collaboration on security and democracy issues, within the hemisphere and around the world. Canada and the U.S. are both Pacific nations and longstanding partners in the Indo-Pacific. Minister Joly and Secretary Blinken agreed on the importance of continuing to strengthen Canada-U.S. cooperation and our shared vision for an open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region and to support its resilient supply chains. They also discussed Canada’s critical mineral strategy and how Canada can be a reliable partner to strengthen the resiliency of supply chains.
