Ending CEFM and upholding the rights associated with girls and women indicate a fairer, more secure and more prosperous future for us every. We cannot afford to find out hard-won progress slowed down or even set back. ” “CEFM is a violation associated with human rights and helps prevent girls and women through reaching their full possible. Too often, it results in a finish to girls’ education, jeopardizes their health plus exposes them to discrimination, abuse and violence, including sexual and gender-based assault. It also limits their ability to fully contribute to the development of their families, communities and countries. “Despite the progress produced in reducing CEFM over the last decade, the impact from the COVID-19 pandemic and other global crises are putting more than 13 million extra girls at risk of CEFM over the next decade. This is actually the fifth time that Canada and Zambia have co-led the resolution at the EL General Assembly. The resolution sets out key activities to help achieve Target five. 3 of Sustainable Advancement Goal 5, which aspires to eliminate all harmful practices, such as CEFM, by 2030. “Today, the Un General Assembly’s Third Panel adopted a resolution to end child, early and forced relationship (CEFM). Canada is very pleased to have joined Zambia in leading this resolution, which received broad support from the total of 125 co-sponsors from around the world, reaffirming the particular vital importance of this issue. The resolution highlights the particular urgent need to reach the poorest and most marginalized girls and women—those who are the hardest to reach—while calling upon the worldwide community to step up attempts to accelerate progress to end CEFM, including for girls and women in vulnerable situations.
