Canada’s statement on Russia, Ukraine and Türkiye grain agreement

“While many issues still need to be clarified, this agreement has the potential to be an important step toward overcoming the global food crisis stemming from Russian president Vladimir Putin’s illegal and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine. “We are grateful to the UN and, in particular, to Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General; Martin Griffiths, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator; and Rebeca Grynspan, UN Conference on Trade and Development Secretary-General, without whom this agreement would not have been possible. We also commend Türkiye’s leadership in bringing this to a positive resolution. “This deal is a step in the right direction, but its implementation is critical. We urge Russia to ensure its implementation matches its intended purpose and spirit.
