Canada imposes sanctions against Haitian economic elites

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister associated with Foreign Affairs, today declared that Canada is imposing additional sanctions under the  Special Economic Measures (Haiti) Regulations   in response to the egregious conduct of Haitian elites who offer illicit financial and operational support to armed gangs. The sanctions North america has imposed are intended to place pressure on those accountable for the ongoing violence plus instability in Haiti. These individuals must stop providing money and weapons to unlawful gangs in Haiti. We encourage all stakeholders to support real progress on a political agreement that will lead to an inclusive and constructive dialogue, and end to the current turmoil. This is the only way to help create the environment needed for a return to stability, law and order, and democracy within Haiti.   These gangs and their own supporters continue to terrorize susceptible populations in Haiti along with impunity and are precipitating a humanitarian crisis in the country which includes the resurgence of cholera. They are also committing unspeakable assault, including widespread sexual assault, against affected populations and impeding the delivery associated with critical services and humanitarian aid. These latest sanctions focus on 3 high-profile members from the economic elite in Haiti –Gilbert Bigio, Reynold Deeb and Sherif Abdallah – and impose a dealings prohibition on them, effectively cold any assets they may keep in Canada. December 5 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada Canada provides reason to believe these individuals are using their status as high-profile members of the economic top notch in Haiti to protect plus enable the illegal routines of armed criminal gangs, including through money laundering and other acts of corruption.
