The Accounting and Auditing Company (SRCC) for Somalia and the Head of ATMIS meet the Ambassador of Burundi in Somalia

On tuesday february 07, 2023, the Ambassador of the Republic of Burundi to the Federal Republic of Somalia with residence in Nairobi His Excellency Ambassador Evelyne Habonimana was received in audience by the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission in Somalia ( SRCC) and Head of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef. The objective of the visit was to inquire of the current political and security situation in Somalia.
Ambassador Evelyne Habonimana pleaded for the civilian component of the Accounting and Auditing Company (SRCC) and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to include posts reserved for Burundian taking into account its second position among the troop contributing countries after Uganda. She also pleaded for the police units within the ATMIS.
Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef took note of the requests of the Ambassadors of the Republic of Burundi in Somalia and indicated that Burundi plays a very important role in the consolidation of peace in Somalia thanks to the visits it organizes in order to get information about what is happening in the country.
Through him, the country’s mission for the consolidation of peace is confronted with the problem of lack of funds. He informed that the donors, especially European, are beginning to reduce their contributions because of the security situation in Ukraine which requires multiple interventions. The Federal Republic of Somalia is therefore obliged to seek other resources outside of these donors since, without these external funds, the Federal Republic will be exposed to a negative impact on the evolution of the situation for the troops, staff and administration. So concerns about the imminent end of the military mission in Somalia have been raised.
Regarding the instability of the political and security situation in the Federal Republic of Somalia, Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef indicated that the new President of the Federal Republic of Somalia must govern with the cooperation of the Presidents of the Federal States, with those of his camp but also with those of the opposition. He indicated that he is preparing a message to the international community on what is currently happening in Somalia. Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef added that the Federal Republic of Somalia has sent thousands of young people to undergo training to become military and police officers.
Taking the floor, His Excellency Ambassador Evelyne Habonimana congratulated His Excellency Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef for his appointment and the confidence that the African Union and Somalia have placed in him and wished him every success in his mission. She also appreciated the good relations that the Comoros, her country of origin, maintains with Burundi and wishes these relations be strengthened.
