The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues active work on Bulgaria’s accession to the OECD

“The accession of Bulgaria to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development is the most serious integration effort of our country after our admission to the EU and NATO”. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikolay Milkov at a press conference in the Council of Ministers. The Government adopted today at its meeting a Draft Decree on the organization and coordination of the process of talks and preparatory activities for the accession of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Bulgaria submitted an application for membership in the OECD in 2007. On June 10, 2022, within the framework of the annual meeting of the OECD Council at ministerial level, the talks on Bulgaria’s accession were officially launched, with the approval of a Roadmap with the parameters, the stages and conditions of the accession process.
The decree defines the functions of the Interdepartmental Coordination Mechanism and the ways of its interaction with the Council of Ministers in order to implement a unified national policy of Bulgaria on issues related to the process of joining the Organization.
“The organization’s motto is ‘better policies for better lives’. Thus, Bulgaria will participate in the club of countries that define the best practices on a global scale”, Nikolay Milkov also pointed out.
Its adoption is of key importance for the preparation in the shortest possible time of an initial memorandum, in which our country must present its position and self-assessment on all current legal instruments of the OECD. “Our goal is to prepare the initial version of the memorandum on which we have to work and which is a response to the road map given to us on June 10 of this year, by the end of September. Our task is to finalize it by the end of October and present it in November”, our foreign minister emphasized.
