On March 4, 2023, the Consulate General celebrated the National Day of Bulgaria by raising the Bulgarian flag at the Charging Bull monument near Wall Street in Bowling Green Park in New York.
The guests were also welcomed by the Commissioner for International Affairs at the Mayor’s Office Edward Mermelstein, by the representative of the “America for Bulgaria” Foundation Christina Lucas, by Western and Central European Metropolitan Anthony and by officer Georgi Obreykov of the New York Police Department.
In his welcome address, the Consul General Mr. Angel Angelov highlighted the importance of March 3 for Bulgaria’s independence and the restoration of Bulgarian statehood and paid tribute to the thousands of soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our country. He also emphasized that this year we are commemorating the 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and the USA.
The Mayor of New York Eric Adams congratulated the guests on the occasion of the National Day of Bulgaria. In his speech, he emphasized the commitment of Bulgarians to freedom and democracy, pointing out that the raising of the Bulgarian national flag is a symbol of “raising the flag for freedom, justice, and equality all over our globe”. Children from the Bulgarian schools in New York presented the mayor with a martenitsa and a scarf in the colors of the Bulgarian flag.
