Informal meeting of the General Affairs Council in Arles

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Vasil Georgiev headed the Bulgarian delegation, which participated in the informal meeting of the General Affairs Council on March 3 and 4, 2022 in Arles, France.

The Council addressed the topics: “The rule of law and the EU’s core values”, “The EU facing the crisis in Ukraine” and the forthcoming steps in the work of the Conference on the Future of Europe. Ministers discussed existing mechanisms to strengthen the rule of law in the EU and ways to implement them more effectively. Discussions on the methodology and timetable for adopting the conclusions of the Conference on the Future of Europe continued. Bulgaria supported the observance of the procedural rules for the work of the Conference. It is important to indicate the follow-up actions, and to find the appropriate mechanism for follow-up control of their implementation.

During the working session “EU facing the crisis in Ukraine”, European ministers discussed the relations that the Union should build with Ukraine. Another aspect of the informal exchange of views was the lessons the EU should learn in the context of crisis management mechanisms, resilience and the Union’s ability to deal with similar crises and conflicts in the future. The discussions of the European Ministers are part of the preparation of the discussion on the same issue at the forthcoming meetings of the leaders of the EU Member States in March 2022.
