Foreign Minister Schallenberg and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Bachelet spoke about war crimes in Ukraine

During a bilateral meeting on 11th May 2022, Foreign Minister Schallenberg and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, discussed the prosecution of war crimes committed by Russian forces in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg assured Austria’s full support for the Vienna-based commission of enquiry. The High Commissioner for Human Rights is in Vienna for the spring meeting of the United Nations leadership.

With the appalling images that reach us daily from Ukraine, there simply must not be impunity. The people who are responsible for war crimes and human rights violations must be held accountable,

emphasized Foreign Minister Schallenberg.

The Commission of Inquiry, which began its work in early May, is a first step towards holding Russia and all those responsible accountable. Austria also supports the investigations of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Ukraine and has provided 100,000 euros to the office of the ICC prosecutor for this purpose. The topic of the media, such as the false information on the Russian war of aggression or the increasing attacks on independent media professionals, was also discussed at the meeting between Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg and High Commissioner for Human Rights Bachelet. In March, Austria provided 100,000 US dollars (94,750.81 euros) to UNESCO for the protection of journalists.

Both the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, and Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg agreed that in Ukraine in particular, journalists are making a valuable contribution with independent research to document Russian war crimes and refute false reports. The Foreign Minister also invited the High Commissioner to a high-level conference that is scheduled to take place in Vienna in November to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety or Journalists.
