Minister of Foreign Affairs Meets Head of EU Delegation

KABUL – The Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Haneef Atmar met this afternoon with the Head of the European Union Delegation to Afghanistan, Mr. Andreas von BRANDT, discussing the resumption of peace talks in Doha and the EU’s partnership with the Afghan Government.

Minister Atmar thanked the EU for being a steadfast ally of Afghanistan and a principled supporter of democratic values and human rights in Afghanistan, and expressed gratitude for the EU’s $357 million assistance pledged at the 2021 Afghanistan Conference in Geneva. Mr. Atmar noted that Afghanistan was looking forward to continuing its collaboration with the EU and the new U.S. administration.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed grave concern over the unabated violence and targeted killing of journalists and human rights activities amid the second round of peace talks.

Mr. Andreas von Brandt stated that the EU Member States were well aware of Afghanistan’s situation, and they all supported the efforts to mobilize regional and international consensus for the Afghan peace process.

Mr. Atmar also asked the EU to help MoFA with specialized training programs for its diplomats, an issue that was welcomed by Ambassador Brandt.
